Outlook won't start after sync

After a sync between my notebook and desktop, Outlook on my desktop will not start unless I reboot the entire system. Notebook has XP, desktop has 2000, both units use Outlook 2003.
The message I get when I try to open Outlook on the desktop is "Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Unable to open the Outlook window. The set of folders could not be opened. The server is not available. Contact your administrator if this condition persists."
